Injustice Society

The original supervillain team formed to defeat the Justice Society of America.

The Injustice Society (also known as the Injustice Society of the World) is a group of supervillains in the DC Comics Universe serving as the main antagonists to the Justice Society of America. First appearing in All Star Comics #37 in October 1947, they were created by Sheldon Mayer and Robert Kanigher. The original team united six popular villains from Flash Comics, Green Lantern, and All Star Comics: Thinker, Gambler, Vandal Savage, Wizard, Per Degaton, and Brain Wave. Beyond comics, the group serves as the primary threat in the first season of the CW show Stargirl, with some members returning for its second season.

Lore & Background

The initial incarnation was founded in the 1940s and led by the Wizard. This group included Vandal Savage, Per Degaton, the Thinker, the Gambler, and Brain Wave. They fragmented their efforts to capture specific members of the JSA: Hawkman, Doctor Mid-Nite, the Flash, and the Atom were all captured. In one notable incident, Green Lantern arrived in Uthorium Town just as armed forces closed in on criminals controlling the city; the town vanished in a flash of light only to reappear miles away while felons looted uthorium. Brain Wave blinded Green Lantern with uthorium, and after reflecting an energy blast off a glass box, caused him to fall off a cliff. The captured JSA members faced a mock trial where Thinker acted as judge and the Wizard as prosecutor, sentencing them to death before being rescued by the disguised Green Lantern.

In Their Own Story

In the late 1940s, a second incarnation formed with Fiddler, Harlequin, Huntress, Icicle, and Sportsmaster. They stole national monuments hoping the public would vote for their leader, eventually erasing the JSA's memories after Sportsmaster knocked them out with a bomb. Black Canary restored their memories, though a post-hypnotic impulse caused by finger-snapping recaptured them until they were placed in a death chamber. During the 1970s Silver Age, the group reformed to eliminate the JSA twice. First, during an annual JLA/JSA team-up on Earth-Two, the Wizard led Sportsmaster, Huntress, Gambler, Shade, and Icicle in tricking Cary Bates of Earth-Prime into aiding them. They defeated the JLA by making them believe they killed JSA members disguised as villains, a plot only stopped when the Spectre revived the JSA using his Ring of Life.

Reader's Guide

The team's composition has shifted across eras. The Golden Age saw the Wizard leading Thinker, Gambler, Vandal Savage, and Brain Wave. A second 1940s group included Fiddler, Harlequin, Huntress, Icicle, and Sportsmaster. In the Silver Age, the roster expanded to include Shade and utilized Earth-Prime's Cary Bates against the heroes. The Post-Crisis era introduced 'Injustice Unlimited' during the Legends event, gathering old comrades like Per Degaton and Solomon Grundy alongside new criminals such as Hazard, Cameron Mahkent (Icicle), and Artemis Crock (Tigress). Later incarnations were led by Johnny Sorrow, featuring Blackbriar Thorn, Count Vertigo, Geomancer, Killer Wasp, and eventually recruiting Black Adam. The most recent 'DC All In' version is co-led by Scandal Savage and Wotan, including Doctor Elemental, Fog, Gentleman Ghost, Lady Eve, Red Lantern (Ruby Sokov), Shadow Thief, and Solomon Grundy.
